Heat Loss

BUILDINGS WASTING MASSIVE ENERGY RELATED TO HEAT LOSS & SMART METERS BILLING YOU A PREMIUM FOR IT

Buildings have 2 functions related to energy consumption. Heat Loss in the winter and Heat Gain in the summer. This page will deal with heat loss, heat gain can be seen on the menu at the left under Urban Heat Islands. Any thermography completed on buildings for energy consumption has to include heat loss and heat gain or the customer’s reporting will be missing critical information. Buildings wasting energy uses non renewable resources and electricity while creating problems with building function itself that have a domino effect into health.

The amount of energy a building uses for heating depends on many factors including type of heating system, installation, zone control and building envelope performance.

This page will provide a few simple examples to see heat loss, there is much more information available in the reporting. The scale has been removed from the infrared image so brighter colors are hotter, darker are cooler. Reports contain scales or there wouldn’t be a temperature reference.

The next picture is an arena where the building envelope performance is important when trying to maintain an ice rink. You expect the building to be uniformly insulated and the same temperature, can you see the heat loss? Put your mouse over the digital image and the infrared image will appear.

  • Energy Losses in Arena & Ice Rink
  • Can you see the energy loss now?

The next image shows a swimming pool renovation financed by the Government of Canada for their Economic Action Plan. You can see their sign to the right of the digital image. Keep in mind countries of the world have committed to reducing emissions and saving energy. It is -8 deg. C or 17.6 deg. F, put your mouse over the image where you can see the building heat loss of 20 deg. C or 68 deg. F. The building systems are working harder to accommodate the losses and it wastes non renewable resources as well as electricity. Smart Meters are being installed to save energy, they will not save this excessive energy loss or address it. The building isn’t compliant with building code anymore.

The next picture is the exterior door of a brand new building signed off as compliant with building code. Put your mouse over the picture and the infrared image will show heat loss areas. The building isn’t compliant with building code, building systems are working overtime to accommodate the losses and Smart Meters won’t save this energy loss or address it. The problem with the doors should be addressed before occupancy but couldn’t be seen.

Buildings that use energy for heating or cooling are an intricate, engineered science and needs to be completed by qualified professionals. Building development has become a hobby, entertainment and economy where everyone can make money. Building owners need to know you are affecting your own investment. Taking building professionals out of the equation has produced problems, building inspection can’t see it.

Compliance with energy and building codes will only be achieved with the incorporation of an approved infrared program. A successful infrared program requires the right equipment with technical expertise from the manufacturer. Combine that with a qualified imaging application used in conjunction with qualified building envelope and energy professionals. Smart Meters are not saving this energy, seeing it or addressing the problems but you will be billed for it.

BUILDINGS USE ENERGY FOR HEATING & COOLING

Building design temperatures provided by building codes determine the insulation value, HVAC size, energy consumption, GHG emissions, fossil fuel use, Kyoto compliant, dew point, mold, fire integrity and overall compliance with building codes. The amount of heat loss from the building is calculated with amazing accuracy, unfortunately buildings are signed off as compliant because we couldn’t see energy use. Although laws are in place, the entire national to municipal building process is signed off as compliant and insured. The United Nations and every member in it is blind to building function as well as their energy consumption or emissions. Smart Meters will not save or address this massive energy waste producing more emissions.

GEOTHERMAL, SOLAR & ALTERNATIVE ENERGY

Alternative energy sources can give the illusion of savings because they are cheaper energy. It is the building envelope, type and placement of energy systems that will determine energy consumption. The building envelope is designed to keep us warm in the winter and cool in the summer without air conditioning use. Air conditioning is refrigeration and used reacting to the exterior of the building being radiated by solar EMFs.

In some of the buildings you will see here, alternative energy has been employed and you will see if they solve the energy problem. Alternative energy success requires the building envelope function as designed. Enjoy the very basic information here, it is 1% of the information available for building inspectors, realtors and home owners so your healthy home objectives can be met.

    1. Hello Amelia,

In order to answer your questions on heating and cooling, I need more information from you on the type of building, is there baseboard heat, air conditioning in windows and what part of the world you live in?

Can you use our contact page and phone the number on the page or send an email to info@thermoguy.com with your number and someone will call you back?

      Thank you,

      T Guy

  1. I am looking at a house to purchase, that was built in the early 1900s. It is three stories and approximately 2800 finished square feet. When I looked in the basement and the attic there seem to be an adequate amount of insulation, but I have no access to the walls. And so I’m very concerned because they just have that cheap electric baseboard heaters. It does have a pellet stove, but I think that wouldn’t be much use. I’m afraid that the electric bills could run several hundred dollars a month in which case I probably would stay away from the house because I really don’t have much funds left over after I purchase it. The house is the old style farmhouse with aluminum siding. I love the area but it worries me that I might face very high electric bills. Please let me know what you think!
